For those of you who haven’t heard, Amtrak has begun work on a writers’ residency program that will provide free roundtrip travel to writers. The idea is to provide writers with a space to write in for free or at very low cost, since apparently many authors find the atmosphere of a train very conducive to writing.
I think this is a great idea. While I don’t know that (for me personally) a train is necessarily a more inspiring spot to write than somewhere else, it is an enforced writing space. You wouldn’t be at home lounging around and procrastinating but out somewhere with the primary goal of creating content. Currently the program is very much in its infancy with only a couple of writers having been tapped to participate. I certainly hope that it takes off and becomes more widely available to writers who want to apply. In a time where it seems like writers and content creators have to become more and more self-sufficient, it’s nice to see an organization that is willing to patronize authors in some way.
