Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods has just been picked up by FreemantleMedia which plans to turn the story into a TV series. Gaiman will be the executive producer on the series, and though it isn’t stated which network this show will air on, FreemantleMedia has worked with several networks in the past. They are currently working on adapting the Carl Hiaasan novel Basket Case into a show for Spike TV. They are working on the American version of the hit French show The Returned with A&E, and they are also behind the new CW show The Tomorrow People.
For those of you who haven’t read it, American Gods follows an ex-con named Shadow Moon who gets tied up in a battle between the old gods of different ancient mythologies and the new deities that people worship in modern times who are personifications of things like money, media, and drugs. It is one of my favorite novels, and I’m excited to see how it will be adapted for television.
