To follow up my last post, here is another trailer for an upcoming sci-fi movie summer release!
Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow looks like Groundhog Day with robots, exo-suits, and big guns. It also appears that instead of trying to learn to be better people, the duo are learning to be better super soldiers, which is way cooler. Visually this movie looks absolutely incredible, and the premise is pretty interesting. It is based on the Japanese sci-fi novel All You Need Is Kill, and I have to say I agree with io9 in lamenting the title change of the film.
All in all it looks like this summer is shaping up to be full of great sci-fi action with this, Jupiter Ascending, and Godzilla all hitting theaters. And, though Edge of Tomorrow is based on a novel, it is at least not based on a comic book or super-popular YA series. Not that there’s anything wrong with those or that I don’t enjoy the films based on them, but it’s nice to see things coming from different sources. It’s also cool that it is a Japanese novel, as Japanese sci-fi tends to have different viewpoints and premises than American or Western sci-fi. Hopefully this film is good and does well so we can see more speculative fiction based movies from different cultures, regions, and source material.
