For those of you who didn’t hear yesterday, Amazon announced its new platform Kindle Worlds, which is going to provide the opportunity for certain fanfic writers to be paid for their hobby. I say certain because from what I’ve heard “slash” and other pornographic versions of fanfic will not be published by Amazon. Furthermore, writers will only be able to write in the worlds and IPs of copyright holders who sign onto the program. Currently that is Alloy Entertainment who own IPS like Pretty Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries.
To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what to think of this yet. John Scalzi makes some excellent points against the idea, while Hugh Howey (who has come to fame through self-publishing his series Wool on Amazon) is more optimistic about it. If anyone is in a sharing mood, feel free to post your thoughts in the comments. I may come back to this at some point in the future when I’ve had more time to think about it, but in the meantime I thought it was at least worthwhile to post some supporting and dissenting ideas about this brave new world.
